Weddings are about more than just that little white dress - the colour palette for your big day is one of the most important things to consider when planning. A colour can help set the tone for the whole celebration and also give you a guide for all those little finishing touches.

Earthy Wedding Theme

If you’re in the process of wedding planning, then locking in your choice of hue is one of the first steps to take as it influences everything from the invitations through to your table decor. But It’s a big choice... so where do we start? Of course you’ll be wanting to get your hands on the best wedding planner book, the little white book - to keep hold of all your wedding inspiration and plans!

Today we’re tackling the top 7 trending wedding colour palettes for the year ahead. Create an Instagram-worthy wedding with these beautiful and on-trend hues.

  1. Light, Bright & Earthy

Grey Wedding Theme

Leave those dark colours behind in 2020! After the year the world's had, it's no surprise we are looking for ways to brighten things up. Soft, light and earthy tones will be a big trend this coming year, replacing dark plums, navys and emerald tones. Don’t feel restricted by the season your wedding will take place. While typically winter and autumn ceremonies feature darker tones like burgundy, this year we will be seeing lots of light greys and pastel heavy earth tones.

  1. Cinnamon Rose & Dusty Rose

Flowing on from our earthy tones, we have blush rose colours. This colour has been around for a few seasons now and continues to grow from strength to strength. The hue has developed from the classic millennial pink a few years back and now has a more neutral brown undertone that looks lovely on so many skin types.

  1. Powder Blue (aka Something Blue)

If you’re looking for a base colour for your special day, blue is a great place to start. Powdery hues in particular were big last season and they will only continue to grow in popularity this year. They’re soft but vibrant and pair great with greens, pinks, oranges and so much more colours if you are wanting to experiment with colour combos for your big day. Having your bridesmaids wear different coloured dresses has been a popular choice for many years and if you’re a fan of this idea, start by looking at powder blue this year.

  1. Lilac and Lavender

Move over dark berry tones! Once again the theme for 2021 is all about bright happy colours. If you’re planning a summer or spring celebration, this is a gorgeous option for your wedding colour palette. It’s whimsical and elegant, plus it will look great in photos. There are many varying degrees of lilac, so if it feels intimidating or a bit too vibrant, opt for a lilac-grey mix that’s subtle and understated.

  1. Fruity Papaya Tones

Papaya Wedding Theme

Orange tones have been on the rise for the past few seasons, with rust colours at the forefront last year. For 2021, we're spicing things up with a new orange shade: papaya. This hue hits the perfect combination of a punchy colour, with a touch of softness. It's a great pastel alternative for those wanting a more subtle look.

  1. Terracotta and Greenery

These two colour combos have been big in the interiors space and have featured on many runways across the world. Now they're making their way into the wonderful world of weddings. The mixture of earthy brown terracotta with soft green tones is a classic and sophisticated look that suits both a modern and rustic wedding.

  1. Tuscan Yellows

Tuscan Yellow Theme Colour

We can’t escape overseas right now, but we can bring a touch of Italy to New Zealand with Tuscan Yellow tones. This is an ideal colour palette for couples aspiring to create a luxurious and elegant wedding theme. It immediately will give your wedding a bright, warm and sun-kissed feel. If yellow feels overwhelming, just try small touches like a few flowers in the bouquets or a simple table accent.

There are many more colour options on the market right now, but I believe these 7 are a great starting point for those in the early stages. What’s your pick of the bunch?
